Cherylville Slew rallies to win Retama feature


Cherylville Slew rallied for a half-length win over favorite Mexican Moonlight in the $50,000 Margarita Breeders' Cup at Retama Park on Saturday night. It was another length and a quarter back in third to Kristina's Wish.

Cherylville Slew ($8.20) settled in sixth early in the mile and a sixteenth turf race for fillies and mares, while Mexican Moonlight set fractions of 24.62 seconds for the opening quarter and 48.73 seconds for the first half-mile. Cherylville Slew improved her position down the backstretch, then put in a strong bid through the stretch to overtake the leaders. She covered the distance over firm footing in 1:43.99.

Terry Stanton rode Cherylville Slew for C.R. Trout, who owns and trains the mare. The win was the eighth overall for Cherylville Slew, and her fourth in a stakes. She earned $30,000 for the victory, which improved her career earnings to $275,780.
