Check Him Out: Another derby?

Email

Check Him Out will go for his second Derby win in the Grade 2, $117,000 PCQHRA Breeders Derby on Friday night at Los Alamitos.

The second-fastest qualifier, Check Him Out defeated seven other eventual Derby finalists in his trial victory, in which he covered 400 yards in 19.85 seconds and defeated third-fastest qualifier Miami Cartel. In a rare event, eight horses qualified for the finals from this trial on Sept. 14, with only two runners qualifying from the other trial.

Owned by John Andreini, Zory Kuzyk, and trainer Blane Schvaneveldt, Check Him Out was purchased by the trio this spring and has responded with a Grade 1 win in the Golden State Derby on Aug. 17 for his new connections.

Check Him Out also won the 2001 Grade 1 Ed Burke Memorial Futurity and has career earnings of $350,061.

Trainer Jaime Gomez is well stocked for the Breeders Derby. He will send out fastest qualifier Babe Watcher and Sassy Smith, winner of the 2001 Grade 1 Kindergarten and PCQHRA Breeders Futurity.

Babe Watcher cruised to a two-length win in the first trial with the fastest time of 19.835 seconds for the 400 yards.

Babe Watcher concluded his juvenile campaign with a win in the Grade 2 Sunland Fall Futurity and took the Town Policy Handicap on May 31 at Los Alamitos. In the Town Policy, he defeated two Grade 2 derby winners.

Sassy Smith figures to improve in the finals after having a troubled start and finishing fifth in Check Him Out's trial.

Special Queen SA ready to win

Special Queen SA, second in the Grade 1 Ed Burke Memorial Futurity, appears ready for her first futurity win in the Grade 1, $345,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity on Saturday night at Los Alamitos.

Special Queen SA, owned by Gainni Samaja and trained by Gomez, won the fourth of eight trials on Sept. 13 by a stunning two-length margin with the fastest-qualifying time of 17.515 seconds for 350 yards.

"She was getting faster with each and every stride. She was unbelievable," Gomez said.

Just Think, trained by Kelly Lewis, won her trial with the second-fastest qualifying time of 17.570 seconds. She has qualified for the Ed Burke Futurity and Governor's Cup Futurity.

Lonely Moon Sign, a close second in the Kindergarten, won a well-stocked trial and made the finals with the fourth-fastest time of 17.705 seconds.

Corona Music in Altoona Derby

Corona Music, who has raced at four tracks this year, is after her second derby victory in the Grade 3, $79,300 Altoona Derby at Prairie Meadows on Friday night.

Owned by Hal Earnhardt III and trained by John Hammes, Corona Music won the Grade 2 Mile High Derby at Arapahoe Park on Sept. 1. She was second in the 2001 Los Alamitos Million to champion Your First Moon.

Capones Vault heads Valley Junction

Capones Vault, owned by Bob Moore Farms, rolled to a 1 1/2-length trial win in 17.746 seconds for 350 yards, the fastest time from five trials on Sept. 13.
