Cheatin a Little scores by four in Colorado Derby


Cheatin a Little handed Danzip the first defeat of his career on Sunday, when he powered to a four-length win in the $31,050 Colorado Derby at Arapahoe Park. Danzip set the pace as the 3-5 favorite and finished second, four lengths clear of third-place finisher Mr. Omeara.

Cheatin a Little ($10.20) had one horse beat in the early going of the Colorado Derby, while Danzip moved to the lead and took the field through and opening six furlongs in 1:11.02. Cheatin a Little advanced, overtook the leader in the stretch, and covered 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:45.48.

Perry Whetstone rode the winner for Sally Porter and trainer Sarina Obergfell.

Danzip had won his five career starts leading up to the Colorado Derby, including three stakes this meet at Arapahoe.

* Also on the card, Sweet Dixie Van ($3.60) rolled to a 9 1/4-length win in the $38,415 Colorado Thoroughbred Breeders Association Lassie for 2-year-old fillies bred in Colorado. Kelsi Purcell rode the winner for Bill Vanlandingham and trainer Tyrone Gleason.
