Chavez breaks collarbone

Jockey Jorge Chavez is expected to be sidelined from six to eight weeks after fracturing his collarbone when he was thrown from his mount in Monday's 12th and final race at Calder. Chavez, who needed to win the race to tie Manoel Cruz for the 2005 Tropical-at-Calder riding title, will not require surgery.

"I don't exactly know what happened," Chavez said Tuesday about the incident, which happened when Sweet Zeena stumbled on the far turn. "I thought I felt something go wrong with the filly in behind, and I guess that's what caused her to stumble. I don't think anybody clipped her heels."

Sweet Zeena appeared to come away from the mishap without any serious injuries.

Chavez began Monday's final card of the Tropical meeting four victories behind Cruz, but pulled within one of the lead after posting his third win of the day in the 11th race. Chavez finished the Tropical session with 67 victories.
