Charles Town moves two stakes to Race for Ribbon card

Email

Two West Virginia-bred stakes scheduled for August at Charles Town will now be run on the track’s Race for the Ribbon card Sept. 17.

The $50,000 Sadie Hawkins, a seven-furlong race for fillies and mares, was to be run Aug. 13. The $50,000 Frank Gall Memorial, a seven-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up, was scheduled for Aug. 20. Those dates would have conflicted with a pair of new West Virginia-bred stakes that Mountaineer will hold on its West Virginia Derby card Aug. 6.

The new Mountaineer stakes are the Northern Panhandle and the Hancock County. Those races are each worth $100,000 and will be contested at six furlongs. The Hancock County is for fillies and mares.

The Frank Gall Memorial will continue to be a Win and You’re In race for the West Virginia Breeders’ Classic, and the Sadie Hawkins will be a Win and You’re In for the West Virginia Breeders’ Classic Distaff. The West Virginia Breeders’ Classics are scheduled for Oct. 8.

The Race for the Ribbon card, which features the Grade 3, $350,000 Charles Town Oaks, will now have eight stakes worth $800,000.
