Charles Town: Lucy's Bob Boy breaks track record while earning 103 Beyer
By Joe DeVivo
Email
The 3-year-old Lucy’s Bob Boy earned a career-best 103 Beyer Speed Figure en route to breaking a 36-year-old track record at Charles Town on Tuesday night.
Taking a substantial class drop to face open company in a nonwinners-of-two allowance, Lucy’s Bob Boy cruised to a 17-length victory over three overmatched opponents. His time of 1:16.44 for 6 1/2 furlongs erased the record of 1:17 set by Jet Appeal on Jan. 6, 1976.
Ridden by Gustavo Larrosa for trainer Sandra Dono, Lucy’s Bob Boy ($2.20) won the $450,000 West Virginia Breeders’ Classic two starts ago, but then saw his six-race winning snapped when he finished second to the millionaire Russell Road in the $50,000 A Huevo for West Virginia-breds on Nov. 17. Both of those races were at 1 1/8 miles. For the season, Lucy’s Bob Boy is now 7 for 10.
Joe, thanks for the article. I felt that you left a big part out by not stating that Lucy's Bob Boy had already defeated the millionaire Russell Road by eight lengths in the Breeders Classic and Russell Road caught him at the wire by one length in the Huevo Stakes. He also hasn't finished any worse than second in his twelve career starts with nine wins. Sandy Dono

OUR HEAT has a win and a second in two turf tries here. She has been favored both time but is meeting tougher today. Like her style, sitting back a bit early and then unleashing a strong closing kick. She seems to like the turf and graduated in a straight maiden grass race. The breeding is heavily slanted to turf. BEEZAROO has hit the board in her past five starts at this level. Has outrun her breeding on turf and scored her lone career victory over the Lakeside Turf Course. Rider chose top pick over her, but she's picked up leading ridder for this.
