Lucy’s Bob Boy rebounded from the worst race of his career and turned the tables on West Virginia Breeders Classic champion Fred High by dominating Saturday night’s $51,350 A Huevo Stakes at Charles Town. A month ago, Lucy’s Bob Boy folded after facing intense pressure from Russell Road in the $450,000 Classic and Fred High capitalized by rallying in the stretch to run down Russell Road. Although the A Huevo, restricted to West Virginia-breds, was contested at the same 1 1/8-mile distance as the Classic, the absence of Russell Road left Lucy’s Bob Boy alone on the lead. Ridden for the first time by Arnaldo Bocachica, Lucy’s Bob Boy ($4) set uncontested fractions of 47.92 and 1:13.56 and coasted home 8 3 4/ lengths in front. The winning time was 1:52.17, more than two seconds faster than Fred High’s clocking in the Classic on Oct. 19. Golden Set finished second, three-quarters of a length in front of 2-1 second choice Fred High, who finished strongly after being forced to check at the three-sixteenths pole. The 4-year-old Lucy’s Bob Boy, trained by Sandra Dono for Michael Furr, is now 16 for 21 with earnings of $714,730.
