Charles Town: Lopez, Casey, and Taylor Mountain combine to sweep West Virginia Futurity
By Joe DeVivo
Email
Jockey Antonio Lopez, trainer James W. Casey, and owner Taylor Mountain Farm swept both divisions of Saturday night’s West Virginia Futurity at Charles Town, winning with 3-2 second choice Cinderella’spalace in the colts and geldings division and 9-1 outsider Queen’o’daball in the fillies division.
Both races for West Virginia-bred 2-year-olds were worth $62,862 and were contested at seven furlongs.
Cinderealla’spalace ($5) rallied from sixth to prevail by a one length over 16-1 longshot Roy’s Song. He was able to complete his winning move despite Lopez dropping his whip in midstretch.
Third in his first start against winners in the Nov. 10 Tri-State Futurity, Cinderella’spalace covered the distance in 1:28.26 for his second win in 4 lifetime starts.
Two races later, Queen’o’daball ($20.20) led a parade of longshots across the wire when she surged from sixth to cruise to a 5 3/4-length score. She ran nearly a second faster than the males, completing seven furlongs in 1:27.56.
Landon Did It, second at 14-1, and 40-1 shot Golden Style completed a trifecta that paid $3,103.40 for $2.
The first two choices in the betting, 6-5 favorite Flirting Song and 7-5 Dixieland Silk, finished sixth and seventh.
Best Bets
MONCLOVA galloped out strongly after closing belatedly in her second trip postward May 26, from which the runner-up exited to graduate with a 68 Beyer. The daughter of Queen's Plate winner Niigon is bred to run long, and can break through with the stretchout from six and a half furlongs to a mile and a sixteenth. BE MIND PHIL is returning on short rest off a closing second in her debut, going a mile around one turn on the grass. She has a blend of speed and stamina in her pedigree.
