Charles Town: Fear the Facelift narrowly scores in Presidents Day Handicap
By Joe DeVivo
Email
Maryland shipper Fear the Facelift continued her love affair with the racing surface at Charles Town to prevail in a three-horse photo in Tuesday night’s $35,000 Presidents Day Handicap.
A 4-year-old filly based at Laurel Park with trainer Donald Barr, Fear the Facelift ($15.20) came from just off the pace under Richard Monterrey to get up by a neck over Flip the Switch, who was a neck in front of Pretty Miss Trippi. Dorothy’s Aurora finished fifth of six fillies and mares as the 4-5 favorite.
Fear the Facelift, a daughter of Fear the Cape owned by Barbara Houck, ran the 4 ½ furlongs 51.47 seconds. All seven of her lifetime victories have come at Charles Town, where she is 7 for 11. In contrast, Fear the Facelift is 0 for 7 elsewhere she has raced.
Best Bets
First post 11 a.m., and an apparent standout starts the card. HARD PLAY can scoot clear of this field of $75k maiden-claimers and be long gone out front. He flashed speed and tired in his January debut at SA, returns with fast works at BHP, drops slightly in class, and faces rivals that are not as quick. On paper, he is long gone at low odds. FAR ROCKAWAY adds blinkers, shortens to a sprint, switches surfaces and drops in class. He is trained by John Shirreffs, who also entered AWESOME ADDRESS. The latter has been gelded since raced, and also moves to synthetic and cuts back to a sprint.
