Charles Town’s average daily handle was a record $1,001,938 during the 2012 season, an increase of 5 percent over the previous mark of $954,280 in 2011.
The track also set a record for total all-sources handle with $227,660,327 wagered on Charles Town’s races.
The record season also included the highest single-card all-sources handle of $3,441,631 on Charles Town Classic Night in April and a record single-race handle of $1,006,798 on the Classic.
All told, average daily handle at Charles Town has grown 30 percent between 2009 and 2012.
On the track, jockey Jose Montano, who spent much of 2012 as an apprentice, racked up 216 wins, 109 ahead of runner-up Travis Dunkelberger. Montano, who came into 2012 with just 28 lifetime victories, saw his 1,027 mounts earn a total of $3,442,187. Included in those 216 wins were five stakes triumphs, including one division of the Tri-State Futurity and a pair in the West Virginia Breeders’ Classics.
Jeff Runco topped the trainer standings for the seventh straight year with 159 wins, including a pair in the West Virginia Breeders’ Classics with Waves and Tides and In the Fairway. Ronney Brown finished second with 79 victories.
Best Bets
DRINK OR SINK went too fast on the lead last time before fading on the turf at Tampa, and should be less aggressive here with blinkers off. Olguin was aboard for his good fall races on the Poly, and should have him closing at a square price in his second start of the year. GOOD BETTER BEST finished up the track behind two next-out winners when he tried the dirt for the first time March 30 at Gulfstream. He hasn't faced this easy a field in a while, and is no stranger to filling out the exactor.
