Charles Town cancels Thursday night's card

Charles Town has canceled its Thursday night card as the West Virginia track continues to repair a hole on the outer part of its racing surface that was caused by a drainage-pipe leak under the grandstand apron.

The problem resulted in the cancellation of the final four races on last Saturday’s card. The Charles Town track has been closed for training ever since. The three-furlong training track remains open.

The hole on the track was approximately 6 to 8 inches in diameter, according to Erich Zimny, the president of racing operations at Charles Town. The area around the hole has been widened to allow technicians to insert a robotic camera to locate the exact source of the leak.

“There is no issue whatsoever with the track surface that would impact the running of a race,” Zimny said. “The racing surface itself is fine. This is not seen as an ongoing issue with the racetrack.”

The track intends to race Friday night, according to Zimny.
