HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Gulfstream Park shattered its total handle record from last year by a whopping 10.4 percent during the recently concluded Championship Meet. Total handle exceeded $957 million, while ontrack handle also was up over the 2016-17 session. The Championship Meet was again highlighted by the $16 million Pegasus World Cup, won by reigning Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and Horse of the Year Gun Runner. Handle for that day was a track-record $41.9 million, but the mark was surpassed last Saturday by Florida Derby Day’s total handle of $49.9 million. The Florida Derby Day’s number was enhanced by a huge Rainbow 6 jackpot that began with a carryover of nearly $5 million. Gulfstream Park also became the first parimutuel facility outside of the Caribbean region to host the Clasico Internacional del Caribe, which attracted a raucous crowd for five stakes races, topped by the $300,000 Clasico del Caribe. “The Championship Meet was an extraordinary 89 days of world-class racing and incredible events,” Gulfstream Park general manager Bill Badgett said. “We want to thank the fans who witnessed many of the world’s greatest equine athletes and jockeys and we want to thank the horsemen and owners from around the world for supporting our meet.” Adonis Creed highlights feature Saturday’s 12-race program will be highlighted by a first-level allowance with a $25,000 claiming option at 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf. The race, for 3-year-olds and up, drew a well-matched field led by Adonis Creed, Mai Ty One On, and Salute the Colonel. Adonis Creed, haltered for $30,000 out of a win against conditioned-claiming rivals two starts back, will be the one to catch for trainer Bobby Dibona. Mai Ty One On and Reflected Star are the only entrants to be coming off a win. Mai Ty One On defeated statebred optional-claiming foes at five furlongs over the turf March 17. Salute the Colonel, who defeated Mai Ty One On with a career-best effort two starts back, returns to a more suitable spot after encountering traffic issues while facing better on March 21. Forever Taken, Shadow Rock, and Gray Dude complete the lineup. Scam is entered for main track only. ◗ Among the most intriguing races on Saturday’s program is race 7, a maiden special weight dash at six furlongs that attracted a field of eight, including first-time starter Bam Bam Blu. A son of Curlin, Bam Bam Blu launches his career at age 6 for owner-breeder Dennis Drazin and trainer Jason Servis. Bam Bam Blu is a full brother to Cheyenne Bull, 5, who is a two-time winner of nearly $83,000.
