Champions meet again in Frontier

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Leading trainer Robert Gorham will send out Michigan champions past and present against five other Michigan-bred colts and geldings in Tuesday's $50,000 Frontier Handicap at Great Lakes Downs. The 83rd running of the Frontier, at 1 1/8 miles, is the sixth race on a card that begins at 4:50 p.m.

Gorham's pair of Rockem Sockem and Weatherstorm each has a stakes win at this meet. The 6-year-old Rockem Sockem, Michigan horse of the year at 3 and 4, pulled off a mild upset in the July 24 Michigan Breeders' Cup Handicap when he rallied from last in the 1 1/16-mile race. It was his first win since an allowance race in May 2006. Octavio Bernal retains the mount on Rockem Sockem at 119 pounds.

Weatherstorm, 4, is the reigning horse of the year in the state. He failed to fire behind Rockem Sockem in his last race, the Michigan Breeders' Cup Handicap, but he has two wins this meet, including the Wolverine Stakes in June. He was almost unbeatable last year and has been assigned top weight of 122 pounds for the Frontier. Regular rider Freddie Mata will be aboard.

Its His Time, trained by Ronnie Allen, won this race last year but is winless in two starts in 2007. He was third behind Weatherstorm in the Wolverine. Its His Time gets in at 120 pounds, including jockey Mike Allen.

Ronnie Allen also entered Dorthys Champ. Jorge Collazo, Jr. will be in for the mount.

Trainer Gerald Bennet has entered Demagoguery, who has not won at the meet but was second behind Weatherstorm in the Wolverine. Bennett will also send out Prince Nick, who won a recent allowance race.

Completing the field is Napalm Bomb, who is trained by Roland Kriser.
