European champion Mastercraftsman’s first runner as a sire was a winner, as Master Carpenter took a maiden special weight event on Friday at Leicester in England.

The 2-year-old colt, out of the winning In The Wings mare Fringe, ran greenly in the early going but rallied strongly and pulled clear in the final sixteenth. He finished the about five furlong race in 1:04.03 over turf rated as soft, defeating second-place Beau Nash by 2 1/2 lengths.

Mastercraftsman stands at Coolmore’s Irish stallion operation in County Tipperary for an advertised fee of $16,276 (12,500 Euros). He is represented by 260 foals in his first crop.

A 7-year-old son of Danehill Dancer, Mastercraftsman was Europe’s champion 2-year-old of 2008, going undefeated in four starts during his juvenile campaign in Ireland, highlighted by wins in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes and National Stakes as well as the Group 2 Railway Stakes. His success continued into his 3-year-old campaign when he won the Group 1 Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St. James’s Palace Stakes in England. He finished fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile that year at Santa Anita in the final start of his career.

Mastercraftsman retired with seven wins in 12 races for lifetime earnings of $1,732,441. He is out of the winning Black Tie Affair mare Starlight Dreams and is a full brother to Grade 1-placed winner Famous and a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Genuine Devotion. It is the family of Group 1 winner Pressing, Group 2 winner Celestial Storm, and Group 3 winner Beyond Desire.
