Chace City, winner of the Grade 2 Saratoga Special last season, has died in Florida after developing an intestinal impaction. A Carson City colt owned by Gold Square Stable, he was 3.

Chace City had been training at M & H Training Center in Anthony, Fla., when he developed signs of an impaction last week, according to Gold Square's bloodstock adviser, Buzz Chace. The colt was taken to the Peterson and Smith Equine Hospital in nearby Ocala, Fla., but was euthanized on Jan. 16.

Chace purchased Chace City on behalf of Gold Square Stable, paying $400,000 for the colt at the 2005 Keeneland September yearling sale. Chace City went on to win 3 of 4 lifetime starts. His first stakes win came in the Victoria Stakes at Woodbine. After finishing sixth in a rough trip behind Circular Quay in the Bashford Manor, Chace City bounced back to beat King of the Roxy in the Saratoga Special, his last start. Scott Blasi trained Chace City.

"It's a shame, because he looked like he had a real good future," Chace said. "He looked like a very, very good 3-year-old and was just coming into his own."
