Cee the Lady looks formidable in Emerald feature

AUBURN, Wash. – Cee the Lady, seeking her fourth consecutive victory, looms a short-priced favorite Friday in the feature race at Emerald Downs. A $17,500 claimer for fillies and mares at six furlongs, the feature is the seventh of eight races on a program that begins at 6 p.m. Pacific.

Cee the Lady, a 4-year-old by Cee’s Tizzy, has been on a roll since shipping north from Golden Gate Fields with trainer Frank Lucarelli in March. She won her first start April 18, running six furlongs in 1:09 to beat $5,000 claimers by 11 3/4 lengths. That effort earned her a career-high 80 Beyer Speed Figure, but it was her final start for Lucarelli. Vann Belvoir claimed her for owner Jerry Elrod, and five weeks later, Cee the Lady returned to win a $17,500 claimer by 2 3/4 lengths in 1:09.80.

In her most recent start on June 11, Cee the Lady jumped into a $32,000 optional claimer and didn’t miss a beat, stalking a fast pace and kicking away through the stretch to win by 3 1/4 lengths as the 7-5 favorite. She has earned Beyers of 80, 75, and 76 in her three starts at the meeting, giving her a commanding edge over her seven rivals Friday. Apprentice Pedro Terrero has the riding assignment.

Cliff’s Secret, unbeaten in two starts, could mount a serious challenge. A 4-year-old trained by Jim Penney, Cliff’s Secret raced to a front-running victory against $17,500 nonwinners of two in her last outing June 4 and has worked well in the interim. Like Cee the Lady, Cliff’s Secret has plenty of speed but doesn’t need the lead to run a winning race. She will be ridden by Juan Gutierrez.

Nina Win, a late-running 6-year-old, holds a vast experience edge; she has won 10 of 45 starts and earned more than $100,000. She finished third, 3 1/2 lengths behind Cee the Lady, in her last start May 22. Ricky Frazier, who entered the week with a 53-45 lead over Gutierrez in the jockey standings, is scheduled to ride.

Glo Bou Liza, stakes-placed twice last year at 3, finished more than eight lengths behind Cee the Lady in her last start June 11 but captured a $25,000 claimer in her previous outing May 15. Troy Stillwell will ride for trainer Charles Essex.

K Lea Road, a recent winner for $10,000; Mizzen You and Ghost Tree, both trained by Dan Markle; and Maker Happy, who blitzed $7,500 nonwinners of two by 14 1/2 lengths in her last start, are also entered.
