CBS to broadcast 11 stakes

Eleven stakes races will be televised during four programs on CBS-TV this June and July as part of the "NTRA Champions" series, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association said on Tuesday.

Ten of the 11 will be aired live.

The broadcasts are intended to replace programs aired on Fox television in 1999 and 2000 under the "NTRA Champions" banner. Fox dropped horse racing last year because it was unable to guarantee broadcast time for summer races.

The races to be televised are: On June 10, the Californian Stakes at Hollywood Park and the Brooklyn Handicap at Belmont Park. The June 9, Manhattan Handicap at Belmont will also be shown on tape.

On June 16, the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs and the Dallas Turf Cup Handicap at Lone Star.

On July 1, the Hollywood Gold Cup at Hollywood Park, the Suburban Handicap at Belmont, the United Nations Handicap at Monmouth Park, and the Stars and Stripes Handicap at Arlington Park.

On July 28, the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga and the Arlington Handicap at Arlington.

Most of the televised races are part of a series of races for older male horses on the dirt that will award bonuses to the top points earners, including $100,000 to the winner.
