Catscape is fastest qualifier in West Texas Maturity

Catscape, a $15,000 claim last summer at Ruidoso Downs, has the fastest qualifying time to the Grade 2, $65,000 West Texas Maturity on Saturday at Sunland Park.

Catscape ran the 400 yards in 19.059 seconds to win the third of three trials by a neck. Since the claim, he also has run third in the Grade 1 Bank of America Texas Challenge.

Mr Perry Dash was an impressive three-quarter-length winner of the first trial while under wraps. He won the KFOX Handicap at Sunland Park on Feb.o2 and was third behind champion Ketel Won and Remember Me Rose in the Grade 1, $400,000 The Championship at Sunland Park on Dec. 29.

Snowbound Superstar injured

Two-time defending champion distance horse Snowbound Superstar sustained a left knee injury on Monday at Sunland Park that will require surgery.

The gelding, who is undefeated in 10 starts at 870 yards, worked three-eighths of a mile Monday under jockey Freddie Martinez in preparation for the trials to Red Cell Distance Challenge March 14.

"It was an easy work," said Lisa Saumell, who runs trainer Paul Jones's operation in New Mexico. "Freddie said he went well, and he cooled out well. The next morning there was some heat, so we X-rayed him, and he has a large chip. I don't know if he'll race again, but he'll be comfortable. We'll just do what's right for him."

Snowbound Superstar has won 10 of 13 career starts. Each of his wins, including seven stakes, came at 870 yards.

Stablemate Tricky Dust, two-time defending distance horse of the meet at Ruidoso Downs, had a 220-yard work on Monday morning at Sunland Park in preparation for the Red Cell trials. Saumell said he worked well and is training forwardly.
