Catahoula Rose has right style

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Delta Colleen, who used a tremendous late move to win more than $800,000, would love the way the race named in her honor sets up on Sunday. With speedsters Grooms Derby, Lady's Jewel, and Lilsisterlightning all entered, it should favor a horse that does her best running late.

Catahoula Rose certainly fits the bill, and she faces eight other fillies and mares in the $35,000 feature, which will be contested over 1 1/16 miles.

Catahoula Rose has just one win in seven starts this year, and that came in June when she shipped to Stampede Park and captured the Duchess of York Stakes. She seems to be coming up to Sunday's race in top form, though.

Not really a sprinter, she rallied in the stretch to miss by a neck to Lilsisterlightning in the 6 1/2-furlong Cover Girl Stakes on Sept. 7.

"She seems to be peaking right now," said her trainer, Jim Brown. "That was a big race for her in the Cover Girl and she's really on her toes right now."

After this race, Brown plans to send Catahoula Rose to the $175,000 Ballerina Breeders' Cup on Oct. 6. Pedro Alvarado rides Catahoula Rose on Sunday.

Full Scream Ahead, who is trained by Terry Marshall, has won two races this year, both at Northlands Park in Edmonton. She won the one-mile John Patrick Handicap by 7 1/4 lengths and followed that up with a 2 1/2-length decision in the 1 1/16-mile Mademoiselle.

The 4-5 favorite in the City of Edmonton, Full Scream Ahead carried a two-length lead into the stretch but was nipped at the wire.
