Castleton Lyons announced on Friday that Gio Ponti will stand the 2016 breeding season at the Lexington, Ky., farm for a fee of $12,500 and Justin Phillip will stand for $5,000. Three-time Eclipse Award winner Gio Ponti, a 10-year-old son of Tale of the Cat out of Chipeta Springs, by Alydar, is the sire of two stakes-placed juvenile winners in his first crop to race this year. Gio Ponti won 12 of 29 starts during five seasons on the track and earned $6,169,800. He won seven Grade 1 races, including the Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes twice and the Arlington Million. Justin Phillip, a 7-year-old son of First Samurai out of Ava Knowsthecode, by Cryptoclearance, entered stud in 2014 after a career that saw him start 32 times over four seasons, from ages 2 to 5. He won the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap and earned $1,293,437.
