Casse sends last-out winner

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Gemswick Park's first start for leading trainer Mark Casse was a winning one, and she could easily strike again in the $100,000 Ruling Angel Stakes for 3-year-old fillies Wednesday at Woodbine.

Gemswick Park had a strong 2-year-old campaign in New York, finishing third in the Grade 1 Frizette and second in the Grade 3 Tempted Stakes.

Following a layoff, Gemswick Park was a determined winner in the Grade 3 Old Hat Stakes at six furlongs Jan. 4 at Gulfstream. She won the Old Hat by a nose over next-out winners Elusive Heat and Frolic's Dream and was awarded a 92 Beyer Speed Figure.

Gemswick Park went to the sideline after fading to fifth in the Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes Jan. 30 at Gulfstream. She finished third in both of her midsummer outings, in stakes at Monmouth at Saratoga, and was a distant fourth in her last try for trainer Tom Albertrani in the Riskaverse Stakes on the grass at Saratoga.

In her debut for Casse here Sept. 30, Gemswick Park came along the inside from a stalking position and won a second-level allowance at six furlongs on the Polytrack, her first attempt over a synthetic surface. She earned an 86 Beyer.

"She worked really good on the Polytrack before we ran her, so I expected her to run well," Casse said. "I thought she showed a lot of gameness, being down inside. I was a little worried. There was a lot of speed in the race, and she had to sit and rate, which she hadn't done a lot of. She did well."

Corey Fraser has the mount on Gemswick Park, a Melnyk Racing Stable-owned daughter of champion sprinter Speightstown.

Casse also entered Closing Speed and Retraceable in the Ruling Angel, which is run at

6 1/2 furlongs.

Closing Speed is shortening up after fading to fifth in the Grade 3 Selene Stakes at 1 1/16 miles.

"She had a wide trip and didn't run any good at all," said Casse. "I tried running her long, but it wasn't her cup of tea, so we're going back to sprinting her."

Retraceable is winless since taking the Princess Elizabeth Stakes in November and has been idle since finishing far back in the July 25 Wonder Where Stakes.

Also entered are Not Just a Rumor, Pretty Miss Trippi, Cosmic Queen, and Indian Apple Is.
