Casamento scores in Racing Post Trophy

Casamento, the 2-1 favorite, was an impressive winner of the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster on Saturday. Ridden by Frankie Dettori, he powered to a three-quarter-length victory over the Aidan O'Brien-trained Seville. For Casamento's trainer, Michael Halford, it was his first Group 1 success.

Master of Hounds, a further two lengths away in third was also from O'Brien's Ballydoyle yard, giving Ireland a clean sweep in this the final Group 1 in England this season.

Casamento hit the front two furlongs from home, after outsider Dubawi Gold had set only a moderate tempo in the one-mile race for 2-year-old colts and fillies.

Dettori didn't really need to get serious with his willing mount as he stayed on strongly in the final furlong, and the result was never really in doubt.

The colt, a son of Shamardal, will now switch to the Godolphin operation and winter in Dubai. Both current and future connections are optimistic the colt's Classic prospects, with both the 2,000 Guineas and Epsom Derby real possibilities.

John Ferguson, representative of winning owner Sheikh Mohammed said after the race, "He'll be trained with the Derby in mind, but we might well take in the Guineas too."
