Carters Cartel tops Burke Million trials

Carters Cartel, winner of the Kindergarten Futurity in May, scored a dominating win in time trials Saturday to become the fastest qualifier to the $1,130,000 Ed Burke Million Futurity on July 23 at Los Alamitos.

Carters Cartel ran 350 yards in 17.42 seconds, winning the second of 14 trials by 1 3/4 lengths. Owned by the List family's Double Bar S Ranch and trained by Jaime Gomez, Carters Cartel has won 3 of 4 starts. He is one of five horses sired by Corona Cartel to qualify for the final, the first of three seven-figure futurities for 2-year-old Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos this year.

The other Ed Burke qualifiers are Miss Kittys Bar Bet, Wicked Royal Cartel, Kiddy Up, Eye for Corona, Tres Spice, Freaky, Magic Show Czech, Tailgunner Tom, and Shez Snow Quick.

Saturday's program produced a meet-high all-sources handle of $2,115,089, the fifth-highest in track history.
