Carter, Brooks sweep stakes


Valiant Hero held off First Prize Perry by a neck to win Saturday night's Grade 1, $1,053,912 Texas Classic Futurity for Quarter Horses at Lone Star Park and give his trainer, Jack Brooks, and his rider, G.R. Carter Jr., a sweep of the three stakes run closing night at the track. The Texas Classic was the richest race held this year in Texas.

Valiant Hero ($6.60) covered the 400 yards in 19.72 seconds, and for the victory earned $468,991.

Earlier on the card, Carter guided Pyc Paint Your Wagon ($3.20) to a three-quarter-length win in the Grade 1, $318,593 Texas Classic Derby for Quarter Horses for Brooks. The jockey-trainer team also won the $20,000 Burnett Handicap for Quarter Horses with Dashin Prince Henry ($24).

Lone Star announced Jim Brooks, 55, was the leading jockey at the meet. John Buchanan and Judd Kearl tied for the training title, while the leading owner was A.D. Maddox. Attendance on Saturday was 5,388.
