Carolina Sky best in Old South Handicap

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Carolina Sky continued her rapid development for trainer Morris Nicks as she made her first stakes try a winning one in Saturday?s $50,000 Old South Handicap at Louisiana Downs. Candy Ball tried the winner from the outside nearing the furlong marker but was turned back and had to settle for second followed by veteran Due to Win Again and More Than Promised.

Setting all the pace under Lonnie Meche despite stumbling at the start, Carolina Sky ($4.40) relaxed nicely after a half mile in :47.19 and a three quarter split in 1:11.25 in which Meche gave her a bit of a breather in the second turn of the mile and a sixteenth turf event for fillies and mares. She stopped the timer 1:40.90 over firm going and won by a length and three-quarters.

The winner is a 4-year-old daughter of Sky Classic and is owned by David Hutcherson along with Tim and Dan Bockmon. The win was her third straight on grass as fourth overall from just five starts. She has now earned over $76,000.
