Cape Canaveral well-represented in Alberta sale

A total of 136 yearlings make up the bulk of the 162 horses cataloged for the Canadian Thoroughbred 2010 Alberta Thoroughbred sale at Westerner Park in Red Deer on Thursday. The sale, which will be held in the Agricentre, begins at 1 p.m.

Cape Canaveral is the most represented sire in the sale with 14 horses. A son of Mr. Prospector, Cape Canaveral won the Grade 3 San Miguel in his second start and has sired 16 black-type winners.

Hip No. 25 is a gelding by Cape Canaveral and is the second foal out of Fabulous Brush, who won a $100,000 stakes in her third start as a 2-year-old. Fabulous Brush earned over $137,000 and her first foal is Girl From Seattle, a winner in her second start going a mile at Churchill Downs at 2.

A half-sister to Shifty Time by Real West will be offered as Hip No. 17. Shifty Time was the champion 2-year-old filly in Alberta last year and figures to be favored in the Alberta Oaks on Fall Classic Day.

Hip No. 74 is a chestnut gelding by Rowdy Ruckus out of One Hundred Plus. He is a half-brother to Teagues Fight, who was the champion older horse in Alberta twice and earned $601,908. Teagues Fight is a sales graduate.

Other horses that were bought out of the sale in previous years include Exclusive Run, an earner of $671,773; Artic Laur, who banked $634,809; and Timely Ruckus, $618,004.

◗ Sunday’s feature at Northlands Park is a second-level allowance race for 3-year-olds and up, and it appears to be wide open. The 6 1/2-furlong dash drew seven horses and goes as race 7.

Feel the Moment, Midtown Moment and No Walkin’ Joe will likely attract most of the attention.
