Canterbury track report

Bow River made a big impression in his career bow Friday in a statebred maiden special weight race at Canterbury Park.

Trained by Mike Stidham, Bow River found himself trapped behind a wall of horses racing into the turn but demonstrated talent not typically found in a 2-year-old, coming inside rivals leaving the turn and pulling clear impressively, completing the five furlongs in 59.99 seconds.

Bow River, owned by Frances Genter Williams, was the $37,000 sales-topper at last year's Minnesota Thoroughbred Association's yearling sale.

That kind of success will be just what the association needs as it expands its sale offerings this season. Sixty yearlings will be offered at the yearling sale on Aug. 6 at Canterbury Park. A second mixed sale will be held Aug. 27 and will feature yearlings, broodmares and horses of racing age.

Yearlings sold at either auction will qualify for a $20,000 bonus for winning a division of the Northern Lights Futurity or Debutante and the Minnesota Derby or Oaks the following season. More information about the sale can be found at the association's website, www.mtassoc.com.
