Canterbury: Sul Lago takes Futurity

With 10,019 fans on hand, Canterbury Park hosted its annual Minnesota Festival of Champions on Sunday, including two Quarter Horse and seven Thoroughbred stakes.

Sul Lago captured the $55,000 Northern Lights Futurity for statebred 2-year olds. Stalking the pace of Just One Spot to the turn, Sul Lago readily wrested command and drew clear by six lengths, completing the six furlongs in 1:11.33.

* Kissoon Thoroughbreds added another trophy to their collection when their homebred Caitri submitted a dominating performance to capture the $55,000 Northern Lights Debutante by 11 1/4 lengths.

* Glitter Star survived a claim of foul to win the $40,000 Minnesota Distaff Classic Championship for statebred fillies and mares. Ma Home Cat rallied for second.

* Rock' N Fire took the $40,000 Minnesota Classic Championship despite bolting to the outside nearing midstretch and coming to a near halt. After re-rallying, he pulled clear by 2 3/4 lengths.

* Sir Tricky edged a drifting Bisquik late to capture the $40,000 Minnesota Turf Championship.

* Jills Classy got the nod in a three-horse photo in the $40,000 Minnesota Distaff Sprint Championship, besting Sentimental Charm and Victory Boat.

* Careless Navigator edged Clootie's Croft in the $40,000 Minnesota Sprint Championship.
