Canterbury Park received approval from the Minnesota Racing Commission on Thursday to conduct a 69-day Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse meet in 2013 that will begin May 17 and continue through Sept. 14.
The meet will be Canterbury longest since 2006 when an equal number of days were conducted. Canterbury raced 62 days this year.
In June, Canterbury Park and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community entered into a cooperative marketing and purse enhancement agreement that will inject $75 million into the horsemen purse fund over the agreement’s 10-year span. Projected purses for the 2013 season will show a 25 percent increase over 2012 and a nearly 100 percent increase over 2011.

By May 17, jocky Gevanno Franco should be completing his self-imposed Jocky Riding School 101--I hope.

Best Bets
NO NAY NEVER didn't break all that well in his debut but he moved up smoothly to make the lead after about 100 yards, and after he withstood a stretch challenge from the eventual runner-up he won while virtually in hand; trainer Wesley Ward is lethal with 2-year-olds and this colt figures very tough here with an effort as good as that first one. SWEET EMMA ROSE, an uncoupled stablemate of the top pick, meets males but she's clearly a threat off that debut romp; barn seems to hold all the aces.
