Canterbury Park sets out-of-state handle record

SHAKOPEE, Minn. – A Thursday night out-of-state handle record was set at Canterbury Park this week when $646,399 was wagered on the 10-race card through various out-of-state simulcast and online wagering sites. An additional $195,479 was wagered ontrack by a crowd of 6,578.

Canterbury Park’s 2012 10-year cooperative marketing agreement with the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community infused millions of dollars into the track’s purse structure. In the first full year of the agreement, purses have increased 100 percent over their 2011 levels and, as a result, a record number of applications for stall space were received prior to the season. A predominantly full backside has resulted in a 10.9 percent increase in field size over last year at just more than 8 horses per race. Thursday night’s card averaged 9.5 horses per race.

Additionally, Canterbury entered into an agreement this season with TVG to broadcast the track’s races on Thursday evenings, giving the track a much wider market. Total out-of-state handle has increased by 30 percent over last season.

Canterbury will race 69 days this season, concluding on Sept. 14.
