Canterbury: One by Design beats statebreds

SHAKOPEE, Minn. - One by Design prevailed over six other Minnesota-bred 3-year-old colts and geldings to capture the $35,000 Victor S. Myers Jr. Stakes.

Son of Rhea was the 4-5 favorite in the six-furlong race and opened a three-length margin on the field racing into the stretch. One by Design rallied into the stretch and pulled clear to prevail by four lengths while completing the six furlongs in 1:11.01. Son of Rhea finished second, 6 1/4 lengths clear of third-place Imagery.

Derek Bell rode One by Design, who returned $6.80 as the second choice in the wagering. One by Design is trained by Mike Biehler for owner-breeders Art and Gretchen Eaton.

* Madam Speaker defeated seven other 3-year-old Minnesota-bred fillies to capture the $35,000 Frances Genter Stakes.

The 3-2 favorite, Madam Speaker took the lead from the break and opened a commanding five-length margin on the turn, then held off a late bid from A. Caterina to prevail by a length. Swasti finished third. Madam Speaker completed the six furlongs in 1:11.04.

Derek Bell rode Madam Speaker ($5), who is trained by Vic Hanson for the Almar Farm of Al and Marlys Goebel.
