Canterbury: Heliskier seeks to keep perfect record intact in 10,000 Lakes

The undefeated Heliskier launches his 4-year-old campaign Saturday as the 6-5 morning-line favorite in the $50,000 10,000 Lakes Stakes at Canterbury Park. The race, for Minnesota-bred colts and geldings, will be contested over the main track at six furlongs.

Heliskier is a perfect 6 for 6. He was 4 for 4 last year, winning his races by a combined 33 3/4 lengths, and amassed earnings of $103,056. He posted a bullet five-furlong work in 1:01.20 on May 5 for trainer Mac Robertson, followed by a six-furlong leg-stretcher from the gate on Sunday in preparation for his seasonal debut.

Never asked for much run in any of his races, Heliskier should be challenged early by speedy stablemate Desert Alley. Desert Alley was second to Heliskier in an allowance race last June despite stumbling early. he then won his final two races of the year, including the $35,000 HBPA Sprint.

Minnesota Classic runner-up Samendra will look to track from off the pace in his second start of the year after having being outrun at Prairie Meadows in his seasonal bow.

The lone 3-year old in the race is 2012 Northern Lights Futurity champion Sugar Business, who is hoping for some class relief against statebred competition. He will be facing older company for the first time after two difficult efforts gainst open company at Oaklawn and Prairie Meadows to begin the year.

Bobble Doit, Willow Parish, Speakfromyourheart, Eurasian, and Freedom First are also entered.
