Canterbury: Diligent Won rallies

Diligent Won pulled a mild upset when he bested five rivals in the $40,000 at Canterbury Park.

Lt. Sampson set the early pace in the 6 1/2-furlong contest and was pressed by Wimplestiltskin through fractions of 21.92 and 44.12 while Diligent Won steadily drew closer. Vazandar, the favorite, was closing quickly while four wide in the lane. Meanwhile, Lt. Sampson was the first of the leaders to give way. Diligent Won kept coming and edged Wimplestiltskin by three-quarters of a length. Vazandar finished third, another length behind. The winning time was 1:15.52.

Diligent Won is trained by Deborah Artz for Artz Racing and was ridden by Martin Escobar. Diligent Won returned $16.20 as the fourth choice in the wagering.

* Ghostly Gate made up for her narrow defeat in the Lady Canterbury with a victory over five rivals in the $40,000 .

Under rider Seth Martinez, Ghostly Gate stalked just off pacesetting Lost Bride, who clicked through easy fractions racing to the far turn. Ghostly Gate put her rival away in the stretch, prevailing by three-quarters of a length. Music Way rallied for third, another two lengths behind.

Ghostly Gate completed the mile on firm going in 1:35.42 and returned $4.20 as the favorite.
