Canon Man brings win streak

Michelle Lovell is tied atop the trainer standings after one weekend of racing at Louisiana Downs and will send out the undefeated Canon Man in Saturday s ninth race. The second-level allowance at six furlongs has an optional claiming price of $20,000 and is restricted to 3-year-olds and up bred in Louisiana.

Lovell, who has gone 2 for 5 with her starters this meet, saddled Canon Man to maiden special weight and first-level allowance wins this winter at Fair Grounds. He made his debut Feb. 20 and became one of the first winners for the young A.P. Indy stud Mingun.

He s a neat colt, and it s exciting to have him in the barn, Lovell said. We have several really nice Louisiana-breds.

Canon Man s first-level allowance win came against statebreds. He led throughout to win with a Beyer Speed Figure of 83. He drew post 8 in a nine-horse field that includes past Louisiana Downs stakes winners Zarb s Dahar, who is now 10, and Star Production, who is 5.

Kerwin Clark has the mount on Canon Man, who following this race could advance to the Louisiana Cup Day program on May 22.

Lovell has a 40-horse stable at Louisiana Downs and comes off a strong Fair Grounds meet in which she finished ninth in the trainer standings, with 19 wins from 94 starts.

Don Simington, who has won the past two riding titles at Louisiana Downs, is back in the entries Saturday after missing the opening weekend due to an injury suffered in March. He has the mount on the capable Elroy.
