Canford Cliffs, a five-time Group 1 winner in England and Ireland, was represented by his first foal Jan. 9, a bay colt born at Lynn Lodge Stud in County Westmeath, Ireland.
The colt is out of the winning Exceed and Excel mare Smartest, a half sister to Group 2 winner and sire Captain Marvelous.
“[The foal] is a really good, strong colt with plenty of quality and a great color,” Lynn Lodge Stud owner Eddie O’Leary said.
A 6-year-old by Tagula and out of 2011 Irish Broodmare of the Year Mrs Marsh, Canford Cliffs won seven of 11 starts and earned $1,470,365 racing for the Heffer Syndicate, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith. He won five consecutive Group 1 races spanning 2010-2011, claiming the Irish Two Thousand Guineas; the St. James’s Palace Stakes; the Sussex Stakes; the Lockinge Stakes; and the Queen Anne Stakes, defeating Goldikova in the last. Canford Cliffs concluded his career with a runner-up effort against Frankel in the 2011 Sussex Stakes.
Canford Cliffs entered stud at Coolmore in County Tipperary, Ireland, in 2012 and stood for 17,500 euros, or about $23,350. He will stand for the same fee in 2013.
