Canadian trainer found dead

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Trainer Glen Martin and an unnamed female were found dead in the trunk of an abandoned vehicle last Thursday in Burnaby, British Columbia, a suburb of Vancouver. Martin's identity was released by the police Monday.

An older-model brown Ford, the car had been found abandoned on the side of the Trans-Canada Highway and towed to a lot, where the bodies were discovered.

"We believe that this was not a random act," said Royal Canadian Mounted Police constable Phil Reid. "We believe it's drug-related and are pursuing the investigation along those lines."

Martin, 48, trained a small string of horses for 505 Farms in the late 1990's and has worked as an exercise rider at Hastings on and off the past few years. He took over as trainer for his father, Sid, when the elder Martin was suspended for a positive test in midsummer of this year.

Sid Martin has been one of the leading trainers at Hastings for many years and trained Diabolo, who was third in the 1975 Kentucky Derby and Preakness.
