ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Swan Queen, a $45,000 purchase by Lou Tucci, topped the 2002 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's winter mixed sale at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion on Saturday.

Schonberg Farm, as agent for Gustav Schickedanz, consigned Swan Queen, an unraced 6-year-old Regal Intention mare who is in foal to Langfuhr.

A total of 124 broodmares, yearlings, weanlings, horses of racing age, and a stallion share grossed $733,900, for an average of $5,919. There were 30 listed as not sold.

There was no comparative session in 2001, because the sale had a different format and was not run by the CTHS.

The highest-priced yearling was $35,000 for a son of Sky Classic, out of stakes-placed Final Possession. Charles Simmons bought the huge Kentucky-bred colt, who was sold by Susan Foreman as agent for Kings Brook Farm Inc., agent.

Herbert Chambers paid $27,000 for a yearling filly by Labeeb out of stakes-placed Fit and Ready, who is a half-sister to crack sprinter Xtra Heat. Woodlands (Gail Wood), as agent, consigned the Canadian-bred.

Woodlands also sold the top-priced weanling, a $23,700 colt by Straight Man out of the Caveat mare Cuddly Chops. Richard Hogan, as agent, was the purchaser.
