Camela Carson defends title

Email

Camela Carson will try to defend her title in the $70,000 Hawkeyes Handicap at Prairie Meadows. The Hawkeyes, for fillies and mares, is one of two 1 1/16-mile Iowa-bred stakes Saturday. The other is the $70,000 Cyclones Handicap for 3-year-olds and up.

Camela Carson, who failed as the 2-5 favorite in her last start, will face five opponents in the Hawkeyes, including Beyond the Reach, who became a stakes winner in her last start after trainer Jeff Barkley decided to take her blinkers off. If she repeats her latest, she'll make her presence felt.

Thekatcamehome, who finished second in last year's Hawkeyes, seeks her first win of the year.

The Hawkeyes, race 7 on Prairie's nine-race card, will be followed by the Cyclone.

King Freddie hasn't won since the 2006 Cyclone, but his works would seem to have the 6-year-old on his toes.

Red Hot N Gold crushed the competition last time out, and Terry Thompson, who was injured and couldn't ride Red Hot N Gold last time, will be aboard Saturday.

Also in the seven-horse field is Crimson King Cat, who has run well with this type and could pull a mild upset.
