Californians pack probables list


AUBURN, Wash. - During and Buddy Gil head a list of 32 handicap horses nominated for the Grade 3 Longacres Mile, to be run for a purse of $250,000 on Aug. 22 at Emerald Downs.

During, a winner of three Grade 2 stakes for trainer Bob Baffert, is coming off a creditable third to Choctaw Nation and Pleasantly Perfect in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on Aug. 1. Buddy Gil, who won last season's Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby for trainer Jeff Mullins, finished a troubled fifth to Statement last time out in the Wickerr Handicap on turf at Del Mar on July 31.

Other prominent California-based runners nominated for the Mile are Adreamisborn, American Fury, Court's in Session, Daunting, Hasty Kris, Jake Skate, Kamsack, Musique Toujours, Nose the Trade, Reba's Gold, Rojo Toro, Snorter, Taste of Paradise, Verkade, Yougottawanna, and Star Parade, who is the lone filly or mare on the list.

Canadian-based Mile candidates include Deputy Country, Five Point Star, Gratitude Attack, Lord Nelson, Metatron, and Royal Place.

Heading the local contingent are Mt. Rainier Handicap winner Poker Brad and Governor's Handicap hero Salt Grinder. Other locally based nominees include Alfurune, Best on Tap, Demon Warlock, Mr. Makah, and Slewicide Cruise.

The lone Easterner on the list is Tour of the Cat, a Grade 2 stakes winner in Florida for trainer Manuel Wayar.

Weights for the 69th running of the Mile will be released Saturday.
