California Chrome named top California-bred for 2014

California Chrome won two Eclipse Awards for 2014.

California Chrome continues to collect Horse of the Year titles.

In January, the popular colt was honored with Eclipse Awards as the 2014 Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male.

On Monday, California Chrome was honored as the 2014 California-bred Horse of the Year, champion 3-year-old and champion turf horse. The ceremony was held at the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association’s awards dinner in Pasadena, Calif.

Other equine awards went to My Fiona, champion 2-year-old female; Acceptance, 2-year-old male; Rovenna, 3-year-old female; Big Macher, older male and sprinter; and Top Kisser, older female.

Big Macher and the 3-year-old Alert Bay were finalists for Horse of the Year with California Chrome.

Art Sherman, who trains California Chrome, was honored as outstanding trainer. California Chrome’s, dam, Not for Love, was named broodmare of the year. Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, who bred and race California Chrome, were honored for owning the leading money-winning horse. California Chrome earned $4,007,800 in 2014.

Four stallions were honored – Lucky Pulpit for earnings by a California-bred; Unusual Heat for earnings from turf runners; Papa Clem for 2-year-old earnings; and Tribal Rule for most winners.

Legendary trainer Bruce Headley and Bertrando, who won the Eclipse Award as the outstanding older male of 1993 and later a leading stallion in California, were inducted into the CTBA Hall of Fame. Headley trained Bertrando for part of his career.
