California champion Evening Jewel produces Medaglia d'Oro filly

California-bred champion Evening Jewel gave birth to her first foal on March 5, a Medaglia d'Oro filly born at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, Ky.

Evening Jewel, a 6-year-old daughter of Northern Afleet, was named the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association's Horse of the Year in 2010, when she won the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes, Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks, and Grade 2 Honeymoon Handicap.

She did not finish worse than third while competing exclusively in graded stakes company that season; her four Grade 1 placings included finishing second by a nose to Eclipse Award winner Blind Luck in the Kentucky Oaks, and third in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

Also a stakes winner at ages two and four, Evening Jewel retired with seven wins from 19 career starts and earnings of $1,221,399.

Evening Jewel is out of the Giant's Causeway mare Jewel of the Night, who is a half-sister to stakes winners Saucey Evening and Petition the Lady. It is the family of Grade 1 winners General Challenge and Notable Career.
