California Authority of Racing Fairs executive director Chris Korby to retire


California Authority of Racing Fairs executive director Chris Korby announced on Tuesday that he will retire on Nov. 1. Korby has been involved with the fairs for 29 years, serving as CARF’s executive director for the past 16 years.

“It’s been challenging at times, but it’s been very rewarding,” said Korby.

After working at Del Mar and Golden Gate Fields, Korby began working with the fairs in 1987, helping to launch simulcasting operations for the fairs. California’s simulcast network that now includes 25 facilities around the state.

“I was very fortunate being in the right place at the right time with the right background,” said Korby.

As executive director, Korby dealt with broader issues, including improving track maintenance and safety at fair tracks. Under Korby, the fair tracks coordinated their meets to form a summer season, and were able to offer purse levels matching those at Golden Gate Fields.

“He’s brought foresight, energy and innovation to his service here, said John Alkire, chairman of the California Authority of Racing Fairs board of directors. “His contributions have been invaluable.”
