Calhoun, Walker sweep Texas Stallion Stakes

Email

Trainer Bret Calhoun closed out a big day at the races Saturday night, when he swept both $125,000 divisions of the Texas Stallion Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park. The wins came a few hours after Calhoun won the Grade 3 Silverbulletday and Colonel Power at Fair Grounds.

Coyote Legend ($3.60) won his third straight stakes race in the Jim's Orbit division of the Texas Stallion Stakes for 3-year-olds, when he rolled home by 8 1/2 lengths. Big Texas Daddy finished second, 3 1/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher April's Picture.

Coyote Legend, who is a full brother to multiple stakes-winning sprinter Gold Coyote, seems to have found his niche at two turns. After winning the $50,000 Groovy at seven furlongs at Sam Houston on Dec. 5, he shipped to Delta Downs and won his two-turn debut in the track's $60,000 Triple Sec. Saturday night, he stalked the pace set by Claybird, overtook that one through six furlongs in 1:13.58, then went on to cover the mile on a fast track in 1:38.74.

Bobby Walker Jr. was aboard for Clarence Scharbauer Jr.

Walker also rode Tin Top Cat ($5.20) to victory in the Two Altazano division of the Texas Stallion Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, which she won by 1 1/4 lengths over She's a Bond Girl. Tin Top Cat came into the one-mile race off a two-turn stakes win at Delta, the $60,000 Genesis.

Tin Top Cat races for Jerry Durant and Bill Jordan.
