Calder's Unbridled hinges on status of Manicero

Whether Manicero runs Saturday at Calder will be the key question in the $75,000 Unbridled Stakes, one of four stakes to be decided on Saturday’s Summit of Speed Preview card.

The Unbridled is one of 12 races on the program, which also includes the U Can Do It Handicap, Leave Me Alone Stakes, and Ponche Handicap. Each stakes will be decided at six furlongs and is a prep for a graded stakes on the July 9 Summit of Speed card. The Unbridled serves as a prep for the Grade 2 Carry Back.

Manicero, a five-time stakes winner, is one of seven 3-year-olds entered in the Unbridled. Trainer Leo Azpurua Jr. is also seriously considering next weekend’s rich Red Legend Stakes at Charles Town.

If Manicero comes out, trainer Marty Wolfson’s Indiano will be the odds-on favorite coming off a fifth-place finish in the Grade 3 Derby Trial at Churchill and a second in the Grade 2 Swale at Gulfstream.

* Beso Grande and White Merlot, first and second in the French Village Stakes four weeks ago, will renew acquaintances in the Leave Me Alone, which is the last local prep for the Grade 3 Azalea on Summit of Speed day.
