Calder: Upsets in off-the-turf stakes

A change of surface due to heavy rain the previous afternoon changed the outlook of both divisions of the $45,000 Sara's Success Stakes at Calder, with Out of Pride and Silversider taking advantage of the situation to register mild upsets in the one-mile overnight stakes.

Out of Pride, a versatile 7-year-old mare haltered by her present connections for $25,000 this winter at Gulfstream Park, rallied from just off the pace for her third straight victory and second in a race switched from turf to dirt. Out of Pride overtook early pacesetter Leona's Knight on the second turn, then drew off from even-money favorite R Lady Joy through the stretch en route to a 4 1/2-length victory under Eduardo Nunez.

Out of Pride covered the distance in 1:40.44 over a fast track and paid $9. She is trained by Larry Pilotti for owner Michael Serafini.

Silversider was sent right to the lead and increased her advantage to post an easy 7 3/4-length decision over Pattiano in the second and faster split of the Sara's Success. American Miss, the 2-1 favorite, chased the winner to the stretch and weakened to finish third.

Silversider, a daughter of Wekiva Springs, ran a mile in 1:40.22 and returned $8.80. Angel Medina trains Silversider for the partnership of Luis Quersia, Richard Esquivel, and the Initially Stable.
