Successful Mission scores his first career graded stakes win at Calder on Saturday.

Successful Mission registered the first graded stakes win of his career when rallying to a neck decision over 6-5 favorite Voodoo Swinge in Saturday’s $125,000 Miami Mile Handicap at Calder.

With jockey Elvis Trujillo aboard, Successful Mission saved ground while stalking the early pace of Little Nick, eased out to go after the leader entering the stretch, took command inside the sixteenth pole, then outlasted Voodoo Swinge. The latter was forced five wide rallying into the stretch and closed belatedly to just miss. Little Nick settled into the stretch with a clear lead before succumbing grudgingly at the end, holding on to finish third, another half-length behind Voodoo Swinge.

Mambo Meister, the defending champ in the Grade 3 Miami Mile, finished a tiring sixth while making his first start since Dec. 11.

Successful Mission is trained by Eddie Plesa Jr. for the Live Oak Plantation. He covered the distance in 1:35.01 seconds over a firm course and returned $8.80.

“Elvis timed his move perfectly,” said Plesa who took Successful Mission into his barn for the first time in January. “Everything went his way today. He’s a nice addition to the stable. He’ll go with my division to Monmouth Park for the summer.”
