Calder stakes schedule topped by Summit of Speed

MIAMI - In the wake of filing for a year-round racing schedule for the first time on Thursday, Calder Race Course has released its stakes program for the 2013 Calder and Tropical-at-Calder sessions, which will again be highlighted by the Summit of Speed on July 6.

The 129-day season will begin with the 76-day Calder session that runs from April 6 through Aug. 31 to be followed by the 53-day Tropical session from Sept. 1 until Dec. 29. The 2014 meeting is slated to begin on Jan. 3.

The Summit of Speed will feature the $400,000 Princess Rooney Handicap, the only Grade 1 race on the Calder stakes schedule, and the Grade 2, $400,000 Smile Sprint.  The program will be supported by the Grade 3 Azalea and Carry Back stakes for 3-year-olds.  Reigning sprint champion Trinniberg finished second in the 2012 Carry Back.

The annual Festival of the Sun, Calder’s signature event, will be held on Oct. 12 and includes the In Reality and My Dear Girl stakes, rich finales of the Florida Stallion Stakes.

Management said the 2014 stakes schedule will be announced later in the year.

“Our stakes program offers nationally known events such as the Summit of Speed, which continues to turn out champion sprinters, along with events such as the Festival of the Sun, which have proven to be both popular and profitable for our Florida horsemen,” said Calder Racing Secretary Mike Anifantis.

The $250,000 Calder Derby will kick off the 2013 stakes schedule on opening day, April 6. The long time Calder fixture has been switched back to the main track this season and will be decided at 1 1/8 miles.
