Calder: Secret Request overcomes

MIAMI - Secret Request won the $75,000 Nancy's Glitter Handicap at Calder on Saturday, despite interference from her own stablemate.

Secret Request raced in perfect striking position along the inside behind the pacesetters Pampered Princess and Romanesque in the 1 1/16-mile Nancy's Glitter. Secret Request was beginning to launch her rally along the rail when she was put in tight quarters by her entrymate Dakota Light and forced to steady sharply approaching the quarter pole.

Secret Request fell back to sixth position in the field of seven fillies and mares following the trouble. Jockey Abdiel Toribio angled her out to the middle of the track for the stretch run, at which point Secret Request launched a second bid, rallying strongly to outfinish Chase Gap by a head. It was another half-length back to Dakota Light, who was followed by Pampered Princess, Silver Lace, Romanesque, and Gentille Alouette.

Secret Request, a 4-year-old daughter of Jules, returned $3.20 as part of the favored J D Farms entry. Final time for the race was 1:47.69.

"She was boxed in pretty good near the quarter pole but has so much class she overcame it," said David Brownlee, who trains both Secret Request and Dakota Light.

"At the three-eighths pole the other half of the entry came right over in front of me," said Toribio referring to Dakota Light and jockey M.R. Cruz. "But my filly came back and made a tremendous move on the outside at the quarter pole to win it."
