Calder: Redoubled Miss by a head

MIAMI - Redoubled Miss outgamed Stormy Frolic by a head following a stretch-long battle in the $50,000 Judy's Red Shoes Stakes at Calder.

Stormy Frolic set a leisurely pace of 24.32 and 48.09 seconds in the 1 1/16-mile stakes for 3-year-old fillies. Redoubled Miss briefly dueled with Stormy Frolic, the 3-2 favorite, around the opening bend before jockey M.R. Cruz decided to ease off the leader entering the backstretch.

Redoubled Miss came outside to re-engage Stormy Frolic entering the far turn, forged to a short advantage while racing wide entering the stretch, then was fully extended to narrowly prevail. It was another 11 1/4 lengths back to Tasso Run.

Redoubled Miss ($5.80) after covered the distance in 1:45.66 over a fast track.

"It turned out to be a great race," said trainer Ron Spatz. "And my rider rode a smart one. He didn't let the other filly [Stormy Frolic] get clear easily. I thought we were going to draw off in the stretch but the other filly fought back all the way."
