Calder: 'Lady' survives inquiry

MIAMI - It took Ladyinareddress 1:48.75 to reach the finish line first in the $100,000 Office Queen Stakes at Calder. It took nearly another 20 minutes before the stewards finally made her victory official in a roughly run race that saw Tiz a Dancer clip heels and unseat jockey Abdiel Toribio in early stretch.

Ladyinareddress rallied from off the pace and four wide to join the leaders at the head of the stretch. At that point, the field bunched up badly, with Adobe Gold forcing her way out from behind tiring leader Alarkandadove near the inside and Ladyinareddress lugging in slightly under right-hand pressure from outside.

Tiz a Dancer suffered the consequences of all the crowding, eventually clipping heels from tight quarters near the eighth pole and unseating Toribio, who was thrown clear and avoided serious injury.

Ladyinareddress ultimately drew off to a two-length victory over Adobe Gold, with Alarkandadove finishing another neck back in third. Special Report, the 2-1 favorite, was also put in tight quarters when jostled by Adobe Gold near the eighth pole. Special Report faded badly to finish fifth.

Following an inquiry and a claim of foul by Toribio against jockey Julio Garcia, aboard Ladyinareddress, the stewards disqualified only Adobe Gold from second, placing her last.

Ladyinareddress returned $30.80 as the longest price in the field of six 3-year-old fillies. A homebred daughter of Tactical Advantage, she is trained by James Hatchett for the Jacks or Better Farm Inc.

"I watched the race from the grandstand and saw what happened but never got to see the head-on shots from down in the winner's circle, so I was certainly afraid we might come down," Hatchett said after the race became official. "The way this year has been going, I'll take them any way I can get them."
